Quotes that matter?

There are two quotes at the basis of civilization for the last 300 years:
1. ... By pursuing his own interest he frequently promotes that of the society
more effectually than when he really intends to promote it.
(and yet...) I have never known much good done by those who affected to trade for the public good. (Adam Smith, wealth of nations, capitalism 101)
2... An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind (Ghandi).
Now, when you pursue your own interest what stops you paying an eye for an eye?
